Who Uses a Lanyard?
Who uses lanyards while out on the water? I recently broke down and got one. It was a good investment. Now, all I have is a lanyard and a small trout pack to tote down to the river, which cuts down on too much bulk.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I use one of those Anglers Image lanyards in the hotter times of the year. A chest pack most the rest of the year.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I use one of those William Joseph MAG packs as a shoulder bag. I have thought about getting a lanyard for some of my tools or maybe even ditching the pack for a lanyard. Unfortunately, I am a tackle ho and I usually carry WAY too much crap with me. My small MAG pack usually carries plenty of stuff for the waters we fish.

I tend to carry too much stuff too...I guess it's a habit. You can't ever be unprepared though!!
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I have been thru so many vests, packs, and bags that I could have bought an Orvis fly rod with the money wasted. I think my biggest problem is that I want to carry too many flies. My box is busting with a bunch of crap that will probably never catch a fish in NC. However, I always feel like "you never know". Here is an example. A guy at a fly shop talked me into buying a fly called a "Medusa". Imaging 3 red San Juan worms tied together on a size 4 hook and a huge red bead and red flash floss securing it all together.
I finaly got tired of carrying it and decided to try it one day then figured out my 5 wt could not throw it. When it hit the water I actually saw fish run from it. I tossed it..... I need to organize my flies better and make boxes for each fishing situation.

You may have dropped the fly right on top of the fish, which probably spooked them. Try casting it a few feet upstream of the fish and let it sink.
It's never really a bad idea to carry too many flies. Especially if you're fishing on a river full of picky trout. It seems like I've got thousands of flies that I've never tied onto my leader. You never know what fly fish will prefer better...
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I use one, I like the one made by mayfly. I really like the tipet spool on it. Only use it in hot weather. Primarily I use a sling pack, Fishpond guide fits me well. As far as carrying to many flies, well guess you could on unfamiliar waters. I found the cliff, days worth to work excellent for me. Once I gained enough confidence in a handful of fly patterns, my fly load reduced. I always keep a new pattern or two as you never know, like Tyler stated.
The Medusa is an excellent fly. Had the best luck on stocked waters in big deep pools with a good drift. Usually DH waters are a good place or on tribal waters.

I agree with you. It's great for DH fish and for the tribal waters. It's also a GREAT fly for high water fishing, or fishing in stained water.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I am sure it is a good fly. It was just very comical when I tried to fish it. Just a little too big and gangly for me I guess. I mostly fish with a 7'9" 5 wt and it seems to have a little trouble throwing some of the larger weighted flies. I guess I need to carry a "what if" box for some of these flies.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I carry too much; I have a lanyard and a chest/backpack with a giant streamer box strapped to the outside of the pack
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I need to get one for the warmer months. Its hard to not use my Double Haul though. I like to use a small butt pack in the summer months and a lanyard would organise my tools well.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
chest pack now, but have been looking at lanyards for the past few days. will probably end up with one. I dont like carrying a lot of stuff with me.

Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
They are really cheap and easy to make yourself. Para cord, wooded beads, big swivels, and a piece of foam or tubbing. Easy project.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I've found a lanyard makes everything easier. Especially for hiking/backcountry fishing. Tools/tippet/chamois/floatant/nippers/hemostats are right there.
Re: Who Uses a Lanyard?
I just use an old canvas creel across the shoulder with not much in it: 2 kinds of tippet, a couple extra leaders, indicators, floatant, about a dozen flies (another dozen I keep on a piece of foam strip I hot glued to my hat), ID and fishing license, sandwich, $6 disposable camera in case I catch a nice fish or see a bear or something, and maybe a beer. Hemostats and nippers I pin to the strap. Other than that I have a rod tube and a camel pack for H2O. I've been thinking of ditching the bag for a lanyard but I'll save the money and make one myself.
