new obsessed fly fisherman
My name is Andrew, I am 11. I love fly fishing for trout and started this past March. I fish with my brother and dad (hookedontrout) and have fished in Cherokee, the Mitchell, Stone Mountain, South Mountain, Helton, and Wilson. I caught my first wild rainbow from a wild stream this past Saturday. I would love to learn how to tie my own flies and plan to get a kit or equipment this August. Does anyone have any suggestions for starting? My favorite cast is the roll cast.

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
Welcome Good to have young people interested in the sport for sure.
There are a lot of beginning kits available on the market. Some are definitely better than others. I guess the first question on the key tool ie 'The Vise' is how much do you want to spend?
I personally am not a fan of kits.

Welcome Andrew! It's great to see another young fly fisherman on the board! Congrats on your first wild rainbow. I think you're officially a fellow trout fanatic!
I began fly tying when I was about 11 too. It's a lot of fun. If you keep practicing and don't give up, you'll quickly learn how to make great flies. It's always cool to watch a fish eat a fly you've tied.
I started out with a pretty basic tying kit from Bass Pro. Then I slowly added more tying materials and tools to it. Cabelas has some pretty good tying kits. Here's a good one: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0074028321210a&navCount=1&podId=0074028&parentId=cat20532&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20431-cat20532&catalogCode=QL&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20532&hasJS=true

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
The materials list seems like stuff you would use. Didn't see anything weird in the list.
Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
Any of the Orvis kits are fine. Some kits don't include everything though (like a whip finishing tool, bodkin, hair stacker, etc), so make sure you know what's in the kit. You may need to buy a few other things to add to it.
Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
The down side of the kits, to me, is the rudimentary vise that they put in the kit. I guess it is OK to start with but from my experience my tying went much better when I got a rotary vise that allowed me to see more and do more. The drawback is that my rotary cost more than that whole kit.
Renzetti Apprenrice Vise
This is a really nice vise and I almost bought it myself before I decided to go for the next higher level. That and a basic tool kit would be the ticket. Tom Rosenbauer did a good beginner book that Orvis sells. Just jump in and get your feet wet.

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
The vise is really the main thing you need to consider. You want one that will last. The tools will likely last, but a cheap vise may not.
Renzetti makes some incredible vises. In my honest opinion, they're the best in the biz. The Renzetti Traveler is another good one for the price.
Ditto on the Tom Rosenbauer book. A good instructional tying book is a must!

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
I've been using the Griffin Odyssey Spider Vise from Cabelas for at least 2 years now and have had no problems with it, and it will cost you around $85.
You could consider buying one of those along with the Cabelas' Deluxe tool kit which is on sale right now for $39.99. If you did that, you could be a little more specific about the fly tying materials you buy so you aren't spending money on some things you may not want to use.
You could start out with some dry fly hooks, hackle, and some dubbing and see how it goes. I'm sure Tyler could suggest some basic materials for some standard flies to get you going.

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
Mark gave some excellent advice. I own a Griffin Odyssey Spider as well and it has been fantastic. It is $85, but I highly doubt you'll have to replace it because of poor quality or it breaking.
Here's the Griffin Odyssey:
I started out with a Bass Pro Supreme Vise. I was able to tie flies and overall it got the job done. I really think you'll do fine with a $19.99 vise from Cabelas or Bass Pro. As long as the vise holds the hook securely and it doesn't fall apart in an hour. Once you know that you really like fly tying, you could upgrade to a higher end vise (like the Odyssey or Renzetti Traveler). That's exactly what I did.
Here's what the Bass Pro Supreme looks like:
As far as materials go, here's a material list for three of the most popular flies that catch fish and are pretty easy to tie. You should find everything you need in the Cabelas Premium Kit.
1.) Adams- http://hipwader.com/2005/adams-dry-fly
-#12 dry fly hook
-6/0 Black thread
-Brown and grizzly hackle (I think the premium kit only comes with grizzly though).
-Gray dry fly dubbing
-2 grizzly hackle tips for the wings
I found the Adams to be one of the tougher flies to learn, but if you keep at it, it becomes easier and easier!
2.) Hare's Ear Nymph- http://www.flyfishersrepublic.com/patterns/gold-ribbed-hares-ear/
-#14 Nymph hook
-Tan 6/0 thread (black 6/0 is fine too)
-Lead wire to give the fly some weight.
-Hare's Ear hair fibers for the tail. You can also use 5 or 6 pheasant tail fibers.
-For the body and the thorax you want Hare's Ear dubbing and a gold tinsel rib.
-Turkey tail for the wingcase
3.) The Woolly Bugger- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPage?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&mode=article&objectID=31567
-#8 4x long Streamer hook.
-6/0 thread (color to match body).
-Lead wire to give the fly some weight.
-Marabou (really any color)
-Saddle hackle
-For the body, chenille is used.
Pick a fly that you think you'd like to try first and then practice tying it! Tie one at a time and take it slow! I know fly tying probably sounds complicated (I was overwhelmed starting out), but once you start you'll quickly learn.

Re: new obsessed fly fisherman
Those are good choices of flies to start with. In fact, my fly box doesn't contain much more of a variety than that. Might be a couple secret flies lurking in the box though.
My first kit was a Bass Pro also. Even came with an instructional vhs tape featuring Lefty Kreh. I can hear it now. What's a vhs tape? I believe I had the next kit down the list because my vice was even simpler than the one that came with the supreme kit, but it help up for awhile. Had to pop it with a hammer every once in awhile to get it to release the hook.
Tyler is right, look for the inexpensive vices until you know for sure you really enjoy tying, but try to avoid the really cheap ones. The $19.99 one from Cabelas should be fine for now. My first one was more like the $12.99 version.

Go down thru the board and congratulate some folks fish or admire their flies in post. Those 6 will in pretty quick.
