Re: Furled leaders
Apparently this is a small corner of fly fishing thing. I have made two bass/carp setup with 4 lb. p line. Made my first trout one today with 3/0 Uni Thread. First try success I haven't tested it yet. Might this afternoon when the temps cool some.
Re: Furled leaders
I've never made furled leaders. Looks like they're relatively easy to make if you know how to make them. Besides horse hair, they're one of the older types of leaders. Pretty cool to fish with something that was used well before graphite rods and Gore-Tex waders.
Re: Furled leaders
Well I've been tinkering with them for a few weeks. Every carp I have caught has been on a furled leader I made. Used 4 lb. test PLine.
The making is one of those things that's hard as can be till you figure out all the little shuttle details then it pretty simple. The jig is pretty much follow the directions to make. Jig cost a recycled 2"x4", dowel rod, and cup hook.
I have messed up a few conducting experiments with mat'ls. Mostly successful with straight forward leaders. Success with Uni-Thread mono 3/0 for a lighter version.

Re: Furled leaders
Andrew and I are thinking to getting furled leaders. Other than Brad, has any one else used furled leaders? If so, what is your opinion about them? Do they really last for several seasons? How do you tie tippet to them? What size tippet is typically used?
Thanks

Re: Furled leaders
I've been using furled leaders for several years now and won't use anything else. Like Teachrtec stated, they do cast like a dream. I use the loop to loop method to tie tippets to my furled leader. Depending if I'm dry flying or wet/nymph fishing depends on size and length of the tippet. When using my 5wt.'s, I like a 5X or 6X tippet.

Re: Furled leaders
You guys made me curious about these leaders so I searched around a found a pretty good video on youtube about how to make furled leaders without a jig or tools. Just made my 1st one using monofilament.

Good for you Mark. Give us the details of the size, weight and length of your leader. Maybe you've found your calling

Re: Furled leaders
FireFly - The only mono I had laying around was some 12 lb. test Spider Wire XXX Super Mono which is a bit rigid. It did work though. I used about 22' which resulted in a 7' leader. I'm off to the sporting goods store tomorrow to see if I can find something lighter. Some 2 lb. test may be better for my purposes. We'll see if I've found my calling.
Re: Furled leaders
The best mono I have tried is 4lb P-line. I made a jig from a 2x4" and dowel pegs. Cordless drill and cup hook make a nice spinner.
Re: Furled leaders
Let me know when you start up your business Mark and I'll order some 5wt.'s from you

Re: Furled leaders
I don't know Fire, I've made 6 leaders today and 2 of those are in the salvage pile. However, I did buy some 4lb Berkeley mono today, and some 4lb. P-Line fluorocarbon. Two leaders made out of each material so far. The mono seems a little easier to work with. I hope my 3wt, 4wt, and possibly even my 0wt can turn 'em over. It'll be interesting to try them out.
Re: Furled leaders
There you go They should turn over with any weight pretty easily. Try Uni Thread mono if you want to make a smaller product.
Re: Furled leaders
Hang in there Mark. I know you can do it.

Re: Furled leaders
I have not been making them very long. Started this summer. The first few were scrap. After I got my jig tuned and learned a few tricks it was pretty easy to get stocked up. Persistence is worth it
