Cherokee C&R Annual Permits Increase In Price... Empty Cherokee C&R Annual Permits Increase In Price...

Post by Tyler Fri Dec 10, 2010 5:10 pm

Small wild fish are more appealing to me, but I do enjoy fishing trophy waters and sections of rivers that run through towns. I'll be marking one of those trophy waters off of my list though. Back on December 1st, the cost of an annual Catch & Release license for Cherokee was increased. Big time. Either the economy is pushing them to spike the price, or they're in the planning stages of another huge casino that demands millions. Let's hope it's not the latter. Anyways, the spike was huge. The reasonable $20 annual permit is now $75, not to mention the daily permit, which to my knowledge increased from $7 to $10. The first trip of the year would cost $85. Way over the top if you ask me. A lot of folks have already made the promise that they won't be fishing Cherokee anytime soon. Now, some say it's still a deal given the price of private trophy waters. The Davidson, Tuck, Nantahala, or even Wilson Creek hold similar fishing opportunities though. The crowds are usually the only difference, but minor crowds and free fishing sounds better than $85. What do you guys think? Over the top?

*Once I find the article, if there ever is one, I'll post it. I'm receiving this info via a credible forum and credible folks.*

Definitely over the top IMO. No way I'm spending that much money to fish a crowded, short stretch of water full of pellet pigs. I've fished it once and had a so-so experience...it seemed a lot like paying to fish the Davidson except with much uglier fish.

I fished Cherokee a couple of years ago and I did not think it was all it was made out to be. We spent 3 days fishing and did not see fish on the reservation much less catch any. Well, we did catch a couple of fish sticks on Soco Creek. We had much better luck fishing the Tuckaseege. I never fished the trophy area and I seriously doubt that I will ever do it for that kind of scratch. That much money would buy me a Virginia license for a year. I had heard that the fishing aspect of the reservation economy was being pushed aside for the casino. Look on the bright side, the trophy section will probably be deserted.

Fished there with my two sons for two days in April and only Mark caught one in the C&R section. We caught 4 more in the regular section. Definitely not worth $75 IMO. Of course as we were leaving, we came across two guys that were fishing right along the "border" of C&R section with their limit of 10 huge fish each.

I have had some stellar days on the Cherokee trophy water. Big to monstrous fish. Biggest rainbow trout ever came from there. Yes I know they are 'Truck Trout'.

I think $75 is pretty step if you don't get that way much. As I said I heard rumors of this. That's why I went ahead and bought another year before the price went up.

Not a expert by any means but if you all go that way I'll be happy to share a few things with you.

Cherokee C&R Annual Permits Increase In Price... Empty Re: Cherokee C&R Annual Permits Increase In Price...

As someone who has fished Cherokee tribal water on and off for almost a decade, I have to say that if I must pick a side I would be forced to go with the "over-hyped" side. I've never had a day there where I got more than 10 fish of any kind, while I've had plenty of days where I'd stop fishing Cherokee at lunch and drive into the Park and end the day with 5 or 6 times the number of fish I'd caught in Cherokee.

I fished the trophy water twice and was unimpressed. The first time I caught a rainbow that was probably pushing 30 inches. I know, I know....and yes it was very exciting - and on a 3 wt. no less. However, my second trip back I almost got skunked. If it wasn't for a few fish from the deep hole at the BRP crossing, and several wild fish just upstream from there on river left I'd have spent the whole day performing "casting practice."

I wouldn't say I was an "expert" anything, but in all honesty I'm no slouch either. In this economy, going to that sort of fee is foolish IMHO. Of course, there is always the possibility that they wanted to make sure and re-sell licenses to the people who bought them this year. I'm sure sales jumped, even for those whose license didn't expire for months, when the "rumor" got out that it would go so high in 2012. I wouldn't be surprised to see them back off the fee when they realize that the purchase totals at the new price are way down. Of course, I don't suppose a down-turn in license sales stops everyone from sticking to the new, higher prices....ie. TN jacking up the out-of-state license fee a few years back to crazy high amounts.

It will be interesting to see if this pans out for them. I think I'll just keep chasing those little wild fish in the Park, myself.

Same here. More adventure and adversity on those wild streams. Can't wait for spring!

tyler, I heard that. This early cold winter has left me with a bad case of "early cabin fever" this year.

Have you ever fished for brook trout in the winter? Wild fish I mean? I know i'm nuts, but they have to be in those little creeks still - and we know they have to eat at least a little bit, even in the winter....

I'm thinking about trying it. I know a nice, open, slow moving creek near Cherokee, too. If you're interested.....

I fly fish year round Owl. The only thing to be required is the water to be in a liquid state. Usually more nymph action than anything else.

Hmmm...but for wild brookies. I've just always had problems fishing for wild fish in the winter. I think I'm going to try a local stream that I know has them - and thick. thanks for the inspiration Brad! I'll report back with whatever I find, win or lose. Wink

I love cold weather fishing. I usually don't fish wild streams when it's very cold though. I've fished wild streams in the midst of big cold snaps and love it. It's dangerous though. Especially if you hike in. You'll be miles away from the warmth of a building or your car. A quick fall in water that has been exposed to the temps we've been seeing will cause hypothermia in minutes! I'll be carrying some matches or a flint striker this winter just in case I do take a fall.

Wild fish tend to be less active than the stockers in the winter. Both react differently to cold temps. Still, wild fish can be caught, given you can get the fly to hit the water and not the ice! Those brook trout streams up high will freeze completely over when it's cold enough. Mt. Mitchell has been in the negatives at times over the past few weeks. Flowing water will freeze solid when it's -5 out. Once we thaw out, I'll hopefully venture out to the brook trout streams. I've been itching to fish them!

The one I'm thinking of isn't that high and to get to the brook trout is only a short 30 minute hike upstream. No trail though. And yeah, I wouldn't try it when everything was wet from rain, and even when it was dry not without something to make a fire in an emergency. I always carry a safety whistle and a magnesium starter bar and striker. At least ever since I spent that night stranded on the blue ridge parkway a few years back. that's a story for another time. Those "drive to and fish" streams are great. Especially when bad weather could happen.
