Early Spring/Spring Fly Box
Not sure if this has been asked..... If you were to fill your fly box for early Spring what would you pick? Think wild trout and Delayed Harvest boxes. Just kind of wondering what the prevailing opinion is.
I am itching to get out there and try for some chilly trout. I hate that I have missed out on these bluebird winter days!

Re: Early Spring/Spring Fly Box
In early spring, I generally like to have an assortment of Quill Gordon dries, nymphs, and wets, Blue Quills, and some black caddis patterns. By late March, the temps are usually warming considerably, so hatches are starting to ramp up. Woolly Buggers, Zonkers, and small flash flies (small streamers consisting of Flasabou) are also included. Other flies include San Juan Worms, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Princes, Para Adams, dark bodied stonefly nymphs, etc. DH fish are usually not very picky.
Early spring on the wild streams means a lot of nymphs. Most high elevation streams are still cold in late March, so fish will still be lethargic. Generally a Prince Nymph, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Lightning Bug, and if it's warm enough, a Para Adams, Royal Wulff, or Humpy is implemented. With the snow melt in the spring, the streams will be flowing high and sometimes stained.
I'm definitely looking forward to getting back out to the wild streams!

I can pretty much ditto what Tyler said. I will throw assorted colors of Sparkle Duns in addition to the Quills and Para Adams. The March Brown is a good one to have, but the Para Adams will generally do fine. I'll switch to mostly dries in March, but keep a few nymphs to run as droppers if necessary under an old school H&L Variant or Royal Wulff. I hate to wish time away, but I'm really looking forward to dry fly season.

Re: Early Spring/Spring Fly Box
Good choices guys! Time to work on stocking my fly box for my next trip. I an hoping to take some time in the next couple of weeks and hit some water. Hopefully the weather cooperates.
