Krazy Karper Fly

Hey guys. Been a while since I have posted and has been forever since I tried to tie a fly. I have recently gotten the itch to catch some golden bones around Greensboro so I figured I would try to tie a few carp flies. I was just looking for some pointers on carp flies and some critiques of the flies I am tying.

I got this off the web as Jamie's Krazy Carper fly. I used a #4 Mustad Tarpon Hook, 7/32 Nickel Dumbell Eyes, 6/0 gray thread, Olive Squirrel dubbing, Rainbow Crystal Flash tail, Rabbit Zonker wing.



Any help with carp fishing would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I think that'll catch a fish or two.. Or three.. or four.

I'm not a big carp guy, but I know Brad Sprinkle (teachrtec) targets them. I need to fish for them more often. Carp anglers will tell you right off the bat that they're extremely spooky fish. Especially in the shallows where fly fishermen target them. I'd tie a few of the same patterns without a dumbbell on it. In choppy water, it should be ok, but in calm water, the loud plop will often send the carp fleeing for cover. Especially if it's on top of them.

My buddy has a flats boat and there are a few lakes around Greensboro with nice flats areas. He has seen them tailing but we are having a tough time hitting them when they are in a feeding mood. Everything I read about carp says that the techniques for them are the same as most saltwater fish. So I figure it is good training for some future drum fishing.

On a follow up.....

I got to hit the lake Friday and the Krazy Karper got a bit of a workout. Tyler is right, carp are very skittish but are tolerant of the "plop" (you need the dumbell eye to make the fly sink as fast as possible then strip off the bottom) as long as you don't hit them on the head. I managed to do that once or twice. The trolling motor scared more of them than my casting did. It is much different from trout where you fish structure. Carp don't really hang out near structure and jumping fish are not feeding, just messing around.

On the bright side, I did manage to hook a carp in the morning after making an errant short cast. But I lost it about 10 feet from the boat messing with the slack at my feet.
