Hello NC Trout Fishing People

Post by Salvelinus alpinus on Sun Aug 12, 2012 8:46 pm

Hello,

Just moved here from NW TX and there is no running water there; so I am a little behind in my fly rodding for trout. I know there are trout here in this state, I just dont know exactly where to get started. So any information on where I should get started would be excellent. I dont need specific holes or secret places genral location will be fine.

I grew up trout fishing with a flyrod in N Michigan; as a matter of fact I started before they made kids sized waders. I also lived in Alaska for many years chasing trout and salmon on a flyrod.

Thanks

Welcome aboard! Great to have you on the forum.

Right now, the Davidson River, Nantahala tailwater, and the Smokies would be excellent choices. The first two are included in TU's top 100 trout streams in America. The Smokies are full of small streams with tons of small wild fish, along with lower elevation streams that contain some larger fish. One of my favorites on the NC side of the park is the Oconaluftee.

Once Delayed Harvest starts up again in October, you'll have an entire list of rivers worth fishing (North Mills, Nantahala DH, Stone Mountain, South Mountains, Watauga, etc).

Tight lines,

Tyler

Welcome aboard! This is a great site. Delayed harvest is a North Carolina regulation that is catch and release from October to June for streams designated as Delayed Harvest. After the first Saturday of June, you can keep the trout until October. These streams are stocked in Oct, Nov, Mar, Apr, and May. Check out the NC Wildlife website to get the regulations. Rangers often patrol those streams and you do not want to get caught without a license or with trout during catch and release season.
