Rooster Tail
Has anyone ever had luck with using single hook rooster tail on a fly rod? Last year we went fishing in Cherokee and everyone I met was using rooster tails on spinning reels, but I have not seen people using them on a fly.
Re: Rooster Tail
Billy there are a lot of streamer pattern that will catch fish as well if not better than a 'Rooster Tail Spinner'. Last trip over there to the Trophy Section in Dec. a pair of small streamers work very very well for me. Try a Woolly Bugger and a Slumpbuster in tandem.
I would figure it would be hard to strip a spinner fast enough to get the designed action out of it.

Casting spinners with a fly rod, doesn't work too well. Like teachrtec said, use a streamer...
Re: Rooster Tail
Last year was my first taste of Cherokee fishing also. I was kind of surprised to see cans of corn and the like in every convenience store on the reservation. I guess anything short of Dynamite goes up there. And we still pretty much got skunked every day we went fishing. Cherokee was a big disappointment. I wished we had fished the Tuck more that week.

I fish over there from time to time and usually have a really good time in the trophy water. Last trip over was a Donaldson that was in the 24" range and probably 10 or more around 20". Those fish see a lot of flies. The most productive rig for me is smallish streamers. Woolly Buggers and Slumpbuster in #8 and #10. Quarter and swing.

Actually, we spent some time in the local fly shop and they failed to mention that there was a tournament on the reservation the week before we fished. We also hired a guide with said shop and only caught two palm sized wild rainbows off Soco Creek. The guide kept saying "there's fish in there, I just know there is fish in there". Not impressed at all. I can "not catch fish" all on my own for free. I am glad to see another shop open up in Cherokee. I hear that they have a good reputation.
