Week 13... Terrestrials...
We're finally picking back up on the weekly tying contest. It's been awhile!
Without further ado, let's see some terrestrials. Anything from ants to beetles, inchworms to hoppers.
1.) If you have trouble posting the picture(s), shoot me an email at wncflyfishing@gmail.com with the picture(s) attached. I'll post it on here ASAP.
2.) If you would like to post a half way picture you're more than welcome. However, it's not required.
3.) Bobbins down Monday evening (around 8pm). Then we'll give tips/suggestions.

Fishy's Hopper
Jay Fishy Fuller is one of my favorite tiers. He can take the odd item and make a awesome bug. Man after my own heart Jay's hopper is simple to tie and best of all catches lots of fish. Produced large mouth, small mouth, and some big bluegill this summer and hopefully a few more this weeked
Hook: #10 Mustad Kink Shank
Body: Closed cell foam. Cut from a craft-store door hanger.
Legs: Bared Silly Legs med.
Back: Sharpie blended with adhesive to give tones.
Eyes: Black nail lacker
Thread: 8/0 Uni-Thread black
Critique please. I hate silence when we have these.

Legg's Extended Body Inchworm
Most recent pattern. Don't know how I came up with it, just came to my mind one evening at the tying bench...
Hook: Orvis 1510 Curve Shank
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 chartreuse thread
Body: Chartreuse 2mm foam
Legs: Mini centipede legs
Add some spots and markings with a Prisma Color marker or Sharpie.
Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Brad- Excellent pattern! Very well tied. You could almost tie a killer cicada pattern with the same technique. Only thing wrong with it is the fact that I don't have any in my box!
Roll Cast- Great flies! Really like the dry Green Weenie. I've never tied dry Green Weenies. They would work very well on the wild brook trout! I can tell you're improving a lot. Next time you tie, try making the finishing knot (whip finish knot or a half hitch knot) a little bit behind the eye of the hook. If it gets too close to the eye, you might have a hard time threading your tippet through the eye when you're getting ready to fish. It took me a long time to get used to tying neat heads. When you're binding the hackle down and you're almost done with the fly, make sure you only use 3 or 4 tight wraps. Great work! Keep at it!

Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Mark- I like it! It's subtle, doesn't look bulky, and probably lands on the water's surface lightly. I think adding a little Z-Lon under the turkey quill would look good. I've been using a lot of Z-Lon lately. Great stuff!
Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Tyler, sometimes I think its a little too un-bulky, and some z-lon may be just what it needs. I'm a big fan of z-lon myself. I use it for parachute posts and wings for traditional dries.
Most of the time when the sili hopper hits the water, the fish come right to it rather than runaway. It also has nice movement if it gets pulled under the surface as well.

Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Brad: I've sat here for 5 minutes trying to think of a critique for your fly, I just can't think of anything that I would change. I know a few places around here where gills would go crazy for that hopper.
Roll cast: All of those are nice flies! If you haven't already, tie some of those greenie weenies with a bead. Wild fish and stockers both go crazy for it.
Tyler: Sweet fly...I really like that hook, that would be awesome to tie klinks on. Seems like a very durable inchworm, which we all know can be invaluable on wild streams.
Mark: Like you said, I would try adding some bulk to that body and maybe an overwing to make it more bouyant.

Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Seth- Good looking fly man! Other than maybe tying a knot in the legs, I think you're spot on.
Bobbins Down!
Let's go ahead and call bobbins down.
Great turnout this week! Hope the schedule works out for everyone. Now we need to figure out what we'll tie next week. Suggestions are welcome! If we have multiple suggestions, we'll compile them into a poll and vote.

Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
Just got home today. I'll critique tomorrow if that's okay. Sort of tired.
Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
roll cast I believe you have some fine tallent. Those are some flies that would slay in warm or cold water. The dry Green Weenie is interesting. Try a dry Tellico sometime.
Tyler I'm sure that is a fine wild trout fly but I believe I'm going to steal it for the warm water. Bluegill will eat it up.
Mark I like that fly it's buggy for sure. Personially I would add some bulk as other have suggested. With that said sometimes I tie my terrestrials with to much bulk. Fish it as is and see what the most important critiques say.
SBeane That is a sharp hooper. Love the mixed media flies. Traditional wings over synthetic bodies have done well in the past for me. It's also in my opinion a good 'Swiss Army Knife'. Would fool em for a big stonefly or caddis in different shades. Nice.

Re: Week 13... Terrestrials...
I'm just glad I'm not a fish having to face all the flies you guys submitted because I'd be in somebody's fryer. They all look good to me.
