Week 14... Streamers...
Fall is right around the corner. Streamers are some of the most effective flies you can use in the fall months. Let's see some streamers! Can be anything from bucktails to Zonkers.
** We'll hold the tying contest every OTHER weekend. Still Friday afternoon through Monday evening (8pm "ish"), just every other week. Should be better than the 4 day interval between contests...**

Hook: #6 Mustad Kink Shank
Eyes: Dark red bead chain
Underwing: White calf tail
Overwing: Chartreuse calf tail
Flash: Olive and sparkle spinner bait skirt mat'l
Thread: Burnt orange unithread
This fly originated on a trip this summer to the lake. It was hot and lake fishing didn't pan out for us. I started fishing the tailwater below the lake. After the first day and some good success I realized I was seriously low on small Clouser. That evening I figured to enjoy the evening I would tie some more. Quickly realized I had none of the fixing for Clousers with me. Called around and nobody was much into fly fishing there except one shop who sold jig materials. Dropped by and bought two calf tails and a box of size 6 kink shank hooks they had. Got strange looks but he was happy to make a sale. He had nothing to use for weight. We drove to the Lowes in the next little town. Bought a red pull chain for a light. Got back to where we were staying and started to tie. Half way thru the first one another realization hit. NO FLASH. I did have skirt mat'l which I use for legs (olive with sparkles). Seemed wrong but it's what I had. I tied up half dozen. Next day at the tailwater for a test started throwing the pattern conceived by necessity. Caught a bunch of white drum and one nice carp (25 lbish).
Since I've caught catfish, carp, sauger, white bass, small mouth bass, and bluegill on them. Sorry for the story but it's makes the odd Clouser make better sense maybe
Bob Clouser had a profoundly great idea in the Clousers Deep Minnow

fly I found and thought looked fun for a streamer. It seems like a salmonfly, but was supposedly a streamer. It seemed unique as a streamer. Hope it works.thanks for the advice any is apreciated.

Hook: TMC 9395
Thread: Olive 6/0
Eyes: Red dumbbell eyes
Weight: Lead wire
Underbody: Sulphur orange dubbing
Body: Pearl mylar piping
Back/Collar: Olive Zonker strip
I've been tying more streamers than anything else. Anticipating the arrival of fall! Using this particular fly on the Davidson in early November before the WNC Fly Fishing Expo.
Bobbins down!
Brad- Looks good! Like the rubber legs incorporated into it. Gives some extra life to the fly.
Roll Cast- You're getting better with every fly you post! I love the fact that you chose a Light Spruce streamer. The Light Spruce has been around forever. Still works really well. The only thing I think you can correct is to tighten the red floss. Try to get it up onto the shank of the hook (the straight part of the hook). Floss can be tough to work with, because it's in strands. Keep at it! Looks good!
Mark- I'm digging the wire wraps on the head of the fly. Gives it a subtle shine. Good looking fly!

Re: Week 14... Streamers...
Sorry I wasn't able to get in on the contest this week guys...lots of school crap/starting college apps this weekend.
Anyways, nice looking flies guys. Just one question for Tyler, any particular reason you want that fly to ride hook down? seems like I've always seen it tied the other way around.

Re: Week 14... Streamers...
Tyler, I like the copper wire because it adds a little more weight but is a little lighter than a cone head. It enters the water a little softer and is less likely to snap a tippet on a less than perfect casting motion.
Gold tinsel is a really good option as well.

Re: Week 14... Streamers...
Flies that are tied hook down don't snag as easily. They also seem to produce slightly better hook sets too. Another advantage is the fact that the hook point is hidden behind the rabbit fur. Sometimes wary, educated fish shy away from a big #4 hook point sticking out from the bottom of the fly. Anyone else do the same?
Re: Week 14... Streamers...
Roll Cast that fly will catch fish as is tied. The floss is something that takes practice. Maybe build the body with thread then wrap over it to smooth it out some. Stop at the barb. You have talent that I envy. I started in my thirties and still have a million miles ahead.
Tyler the browns will pound that fly. I tie my Zonkers hook up. Dumb bell up or down?
Mark never under estimate the power of a Woolly Bugger. I have a streamer box that is 90% Buggers. Catch lots of fish in lots of species. Have you ever tried coating the wire head with UV Knot Sense, epoxy, or something similar?

Re: Week 14... Streamers...
teachrtec - I like to keep a few buggers handy myself, and I have used 2 part epoxy on occasions to coat the heads of these. Works good and makes for a very durable fly.
