Some strange picks....
In anticipation of actually going fishing next week I decided to buy some flies to fill out my box. Inevitably, I am drawn to buy some flies because they look super cool. I have no idea if they will work around here, I just buy them and say "If they work, they work. Otherwise screw it!"
I read an article in Fly Tyer recently about super hero inspired flies. I was intrigued by the Superman Fly but I thought it was just something tied for the article. I ran across them at Great Outdoor Provision Co. today and I just had to get a couple to try. One is the blueish body and one has an olive body. They look like a Copper John with legs to me... I am interested in trying it out.
The other one I had to get is unknown because I forgot to look at the name when I bought it. I loved the eyes on it! After closer inspection I think it really looks like a trout fry when they are still sucking off a yolk sack. I think it might be interesting to fish this fly with an egg pattern dropped off it. I also think it would be great to fish after the spawn. I might still give it a whirl next week because it has some orange eggy flash to it and those eyes are really freaky looking.
I was just wondering what everyone else thought of them and if they would be effective this early in the season?

Re: Some strange picks....
Im very interested in that second fly. Although it may work great down here for browns. I think it may be a deadly pattern for steelhead during my trip back home to NY. If its in GOP then I can stop in and look for it. I havent talked to Mike in some time anyhow.
Re: Some strange picks....
Yeah, Greensboro store. They have it in two colors, orange and a tan or pinkish shade.
Re: Some strange picks....
The Superman fly looks like a blue Cooper John a friend on mine swears by. His doesn't have the legs and wing case is a little more standard. That one has a lot of positive characteristics. It should do well in DH streams and probably would stir up more than a few wild fish.
Th second one is a fry pattern. Trout certainly eat trout. That to should work. Probably on a strip or swing. I would probably fish that in tandem behind a slightly larger streamer. Stir some chase and compete reactions.

Re: Some strange picks....
You can find some unique patterns at local fly shops!!
The first one does look like a modified Copper John. It really looks like an excellent pattern.
The other one is definitely a "trout fry fly" (say that 5 times fast). Don't know the name of the fly, most likely a local pattern tied by local anglers. Another killer looking pattern!!

This is the original article I read in Fly Tier Magazine.
"The SuperHeros of Flies"
GOPCo has the Superman and Batman fly. They are certainly wild creations. I will let you know how they do in the DH waters.

Re: Some strange picks....
An update, my Olive Superman fly did catch a trout or two as a dropper off a Stimulator. I guess I need to get a few more bigger ones for later.
