Gar Flies
Okay I have never caught a gar on any tackle Seen some monsters in the lakes in Tn. Does anybody have a go to gar fly they would be willing to share? Not a lot on this one out on the web seems like or maybe I'm looking at it wrong.
Re: Gar Flies
I'm not a gar fisherman, but I have heard that you don't even need a hook to catch them. Frayed nylon rope apparently works! The nylon catches their teeth. I guess you could come up with some sort of a nylon rope, hookless fly! They've got unbelievably bony jaws, so if you use a hook, you have to really set it in order to get a proper hook set. I'm sure any pike or musky fly would work well.
Re: Gar Flies
I've seen both gar and pickerel jump on a flash-a-bugger first hand, with 6x tippet no less. Tyler is right about the boney jaws, he ran about 20 yards and gave it back. Couldn't believe he didn't break everything I had. That was a Longnosed gar, not the alligator gar. I would image anything that resembles a small fish would probably work. Something with a little flash.
Re: Gar Flies
I made a few rough rope flies for the week. They have a hook at the head and look like a giant ball dress. Probably give the bait-fish shape. Made them long (6-8"). Figured if that was a deal breaker I could trim on the spot.
